The Case For Gunther Becoming Champion

Gunther needs to leave Clash in Italy as champion. That might be my biggest WWE hot take right now, but after watching SmackDown, I'm more convinced than ever that WWE has a massive opportunity sitting right in front of them. Gunther has already proven he can carry a brand, elevate championships, and make every match feel important. If WWE wants a dominant champion that fans take seriously, the answer is staring them in the face.
For years, Gunther has built a reputation as one of the most consistent performers in professional wrestling. Whether it's his historic Intercontinental Championship reign or the way he presents himself as a legitimate threat every time he steps into the ring, he feels different from almost everyone else on the roster. That's why I believe putting the championship on him isn't just the right move for the short term—it's the right move for WWE's future.
In this video, I'm breaking down exactly why Gunther should win, why WWE could be making a huge mistake if they go in another direction, and why this might be the perfect time to pull the trigger. Agree or disagree, this is one hot take that I think WWE fans need to hear before Clash in Italy.

Guther said he was gonna choke out Cody Rhodes, like he did to AJ Styles, John Cena, and that other guy. And in hot takes today, we have Charles Yancey saying, I think Gunther should take the belt off of Cody Rhodes. And I think so too. I know it's the cool thing to say that Cody shouldn't be champion. I do understand that, but there's a lot more than just my personal feelings in this matter. I think Gunther has more of an upside as champion than Cody Rhodes does. In fact, Cody Rhodes, the only upside to Cody being champion right now is basically if we do a knight of champions where it's champion versus champion, you could have a situation where you get Cody and Roman III. You know, it's headlined to WrestleMania main events. So getting the third rubber match between those guys, that would be that would be a big freaking deal. However, let's look at the possibility of Gunther winning and why Gunther makes more sense in becoming the champion. But first, let me tell you how you can be a champion. You see, this belt on my shoulder, I'm gonna give it away. How do you win it? All you gotta do is comment below and subscribe to the channel. It's not a toy, it's a replica, and I'll mail it anywhere in the world. But you gotta subscribe, people. All right, so okay, so the upside to Gunther winning is we'll start off with the obvious, and it's the same one about Cody being champion versus champion. Roman Reigns versus Gunther, it's never happened. It's something I want to see happen, but for some reason, those two are kind of like final bosses, and the the stars have never aligned for them to actually get into a storyline together. And the beauty of champion versus champion, while overall I do not like it, there is an upside. You get matches you wouldn't otherwise be able to see. And Gunther versus Roman, that is a juicy prospect as well. Another reason is it freshens up Cody Rhodes. I think Cody was more interesting when he was chasing Drew McIntyre earlier in the year for the title than when he got the title and defended it against Randy Orton. Granted, granted, there was the whole Pat McAfee debacle, but you know that aside, Cody just he doesn't do it for me as champion. Now, if he does it for you as champion, great, awesome. However, I always felt he was better without and chasing it. And he's already kind of in a storyline with Sami Zayn, so those two could go off for a little bit, and then Cody could return around maybe Survivor series or something and start challenging for the belt again. And then the final reason is the challengers that Guther gets to face. Okay, so hear me out, hear me out. Guther becomes champion, right? Well, we're about to do King of the Ring. Oba Femi, let's say he beats Brock Lesnar and he enters the King of the Ring and he wins it. Maybe Gunther attacks Oba the moment he wins the King of the Ring and he says, I want to beat the guy who beat Brock Lesnar. And so Oba picks Gunther. And then Gunther, who has beaten John Cena, AJ Styles, that other guy. Well, that rub then gets passed on to Obafemi, who is deserving. Or we go another route. What if Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi, their feud continues, right? You know, Oba loses at Clash in Italy, and so now they got their rubber match at SummerSlam. Well, what if we let LA Knight win? And L.A. Knight says, you know, the night after Raw, me and Gunther have some words, and then he ran away. Well, he can't run away from me. Big guy, L.A. Knight, he's in his 40s, and we've kind of taken him to the brink so many times that his fans are a little disillusioned. So, what better way to illusion us? Illusion us again by letting him beat Gunther of all people. Or whether Brock wins or loses against Oba Femi, he challenges Gunther. Whether it's because, you know, he beats Oba Femi and he says, you know what? I'm back and I want to be champion, or he loses to Oba Femi and he wants to prove that he still has what it takes to be champion. Either way, he challenges Gunther, and Gunther is just like, no, I'm not gonna do it unless you put your career on the line, and then Gunther can add another career to his career legend gimmick right there. So you got three really good storylines that you can run if Gunther wins. Plus, Cody can instantly go into a pre program with Sami Zayn. It's like win-win across the board here, people. And please, God, if Gunther does win, please let his first challenger be Grande Americano after he beats the OG Grande Americano in a mask versus mask match. Oh my god, that would be the perfect money in the bank feud right there because Grande Americano, you know, won't win the title, but the the money in the bank is what sells that PLE. So you could literally have Guther versus Grande. That would be so that would be so awesome. I love that, the thought of that match right there. So, anyways, let's do some more hot takes. We got the one cheapie says Matt Cardona looked great out there, even though he's pretty much exclusively a jobber now. I liked how he made them look strong. Yes, Matt Cardona, Zach Ryder, fought Sami Zayn last night. It's very unfortunate. I was kind of hoping that I didn't think that Matt Ryder was ever gonna become the the top champion. But at this point, I don't know if he'll ever become the US champion. And I was kind of hoping that he would be a very strong mid-card presence, but it looks like he has taken the role of Apollo Cruz. Aikas who says trick slapping Ricky was hilarious. Finally, they are allowing Jade to be a great heel. Yes, Jay Cargill is doing a great job. I am really enjoying heel Jade, but that trick slap, that trick slap is so funny, and Ricky Saints sold it so well, probably a little too well. Like, he's just a backhand, and Ricky Saints literally goes out of the ring. That's freaking hilarious. I love the Trick Williams trick slap. TTJC says, I can't wait till they pull the trigger on Sammy and Johnny Gargano as tag partners. Whew, I don't know. I'm not sure if I want them to be a tag team, but I wouldn't mind if they would pair up like Sammy used to do with Kevin Owens. They were kind of just like, they would just hype each other up and just be obnoxious together. I love AEW Wrestling. He says, I think I'm fully giving up on Johnny Gargano. I truly hate the play dead gimmick he's doing. It's just stupid. You know, there were two moments actually when it looked like it was done, and I thought, okay, you know, there was a good payoff. One time, literally, I forget who, somebody just kind of got in his face and said, You're Johnny Wrestling, get out there and and and prove it. And he was like, Yeah, you're right. I am Johnny Wrestling. He went out there and then he got squashed by Oba Femi and then he went back to planking. And then on NXT, one time, like he just was like in the corner or something, and he accidentally he was planking the whole time. And then like the match, it was like a fatal four-way or something, and it just so happened. I think Candace or someone put Johnny on top of the other person, and one, two, three, he won, and then he kind of like woke up, like, what? I won't and then he was like, I'm Johnny wrestling again. So they had two good times that they actually snapped him out of it, and then he just went back into it. I I mean I've seen worse, but like this is very much it's kind of a head scratcher gimmick. What are we doing here? So I do like seeing me talking to him all the time as a confidant, but it's I think it is time to do something and keep that something going, other than just you know, plank it. A great way to collect a paycheck, but long term it's not gonna help, it's not gonna help his career. It's OTW says, I've literally seen the Miz work every position on the card seamlessly for near 20 years, and he could still be a main inventor today if asked. Bro might be the GOAT. He is definitely gonna be one of the most underrated talents of all time, which is crazy because he's a two-time Grand Slam wrestle main inventor, you know. But yeah, he's just so overlooked. Now, I believe Dan Housen would have got over no matter what, because Dan Housen was hugely mega over before his feud with the Miz. But I think the Miz has definitely helped, helped Dan Housen. Because no matter how over you are, if you don't have a good dance partner, eventually, eventually the fans do tire and look for the next flavor of the month. And I have said this many times on this channel, and I'll say it again. The Miz is just one promo away from re-entering the main event. If Triple H said, Miz, I want you to go out there and cut a scathing promo on Cody Rhodes. I bet you the fans would be begging to see Cody and Miz at the next PLE. Killer Wolf says, great matches between Melo and Ricky and Axiom and Miz. Axiom and Ms. was very good. Nice to see Axiom be able to at least wrestle in front of his hometown. And Miz, or no, and Mello and Ricky. Yeah, that was a great match. That was a great match. They have good chemistry, but like, man, it's just like Sol Ruka with with Ricky Saint. He lost against Cody, he lost against Melo, and then tonight was a double count out. What are we doing with this guy? Is he here in this triple threat feud just so Carmelo and Trick don't look bad? And Ricky is gonna be the one that takes all the L's? Jimbo Slice says Sami Zayn needs to chill out and stop doing such good work as a heel, or else he's gonna accidentally turn himself baby face. You're right, like he's already a baby face in my eyes. And of course, the three rider dies that are somewhere out there. God, I am just I just love Sami Zayn so much as a heel. Like it is, it is like night and day difference between heel Sammy and babyface Sammy. So much better. Alfonso Patchen says, sorry Chop, don't watch AEW, but wish you well on this new journey with wrestling content. And I'll see you on the side, the WWE side. I barely have time to watch WWE, so yeah. So I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. It's either I'm not gonna watch your channel because you're doing AEW content right now, or you are only gonna watch the WWE content and not the AEW content. Well, just so you know, I'm still doing WWE content. I've done two AEW videos in the last 365 days. So if you look at the ratio, it's still very heavy leaning towards WWE. If my AEW videos do well, then I will do more. But at the same time, I'm not just gonna be like Baba WWE. But right now, it looks like I'll probably do one AEW video a week Thursdays. So, Alfonso Passion, I suggest you just don't watch Thursday. Teddy Board Ward says, I love the Americano AI comic book segment for the mask first mask match on AAA tonight. I'm gonna try to, I'm gonna try to actually stream triple A tonight, the mask first mask match. I don't know though, no promises. But yeah, I I did enjoy it. I did enjoy this segment to get everybody up to speed. I I I wit I can't there's a part of me that's like, I wish the match had been at WrestleMania. But then again, it would have only got what, like four minutes. So, like, they're doing such great work, this mask vs mask match and in triple A. In fact, it might be the well, the most well-thought out storyline going in WWE right now, and it's not even in WWE proper. So props, props to Undertaker because Undertaker is the main booker in Triple A right now. And if you don't know what Triple A is, it's a it's a Mexican promotion that WWE TKO owns. Dashi Negan says only the crowd was enjoyable than the actual show. Uh I thought the show had some good moments. I love the Chelsea Green one, but yes, the uh the crowd was really into it. And there's just a different energy. There's just a different energy. They even do some of the same chants that are just very like kind of robotic now, and just you know, you're expected to do in a WWE show, but it just feels a little different. Feels like there's a little more emotion to a WWE foreign crowd. Sean Storm says it's pretty gross that if you are someone like Axiom, the only time you'll be used as if you're in your home country. Hashtag cheap pop. I agree. I agree with that actually. I will say that I'm glad, I'm at least glad they gave Axiom a chance to wrestle in front of his people. But at the same time, it's like, what are we doing with the guy? Like, can't we figure out a way to make a storyline? Vince Russo back in the day love or hate the guy. At the very least, he tried to make sure that everybody had a storyline. Sure, some of the storylines involved dating an 80-year-old woman, getting her pregnant so she can birth a hand, but at least everybody got a storyline. Errol Noir says, Where were Julia or Jordan Grace? Yeah, where's Jordan Grace been though, for real? Julia at least just lost her title, but Jordan Grace has been like non-existent. I feel Jordan Grace might be the worst call-up since Carrion Cross. And not the Karrion Cross that returned, but the Carrion Cross that came out in like the Mad Max gear. Like, wow, Jordan Grace, like she was the first person to cross over from TNA to WWE when they started teaming up together in a Royal Rumble. And boy, howdy, Jordan Grace, they just don't do anything with her except for make her just into nothing. Kev WWE says SmackDown was solid tonight. Great matches like Ricky and Mello, Sammy and Matt definitely stole the show. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I felt that this was a decent Smackdown, but a very forgettable SmackDown. That said, I am super glad you liked it. I know, like, it seems like lately I'm more negative than positive on WWE, but like they're really just they're really just phoning it in. Like ChatGPT, come on, man. Keith Codwell says Trick Williams has become a novelty act with a sidekick. Yeah, I said this on my one-take one shot. I do like little Yachty, but it does feel like little Yachty is starting to take the spotlight from Trick Williams, or at least share the spotlight with Trick Williams. And I liked him before WrestleMania when it was all about Trick and Little Yachty was there kind of just to amplify the Trick Williams act. Trick did all the talking, and Little Yachty would just chime in with a uh-huh, yep, you got it. Yeah, tell me about it. Talk to me, stuff like that. And then he would like swing a random kendo stick. This should not be a two-man act. This should be the Trick Williams show with a co-host. Just call me underscore D. I just hope the MFTs vs. Keys Priest and Truth feud doesn't last nine months. I think the average Damien Priest feud is about six months, actually, which is usually five months too long. Comet of Doom says, Man, I've really fallen off the last couple months. I don't even watch because I've been conditioned to think go home shows don't mean anything anymore. I guess I wasn't wrong. No, you could have, you weren't wrong. This was not a good go home show. Raw, Raw was a decent go home show, but this one, very forgettable. Logistic Cat says Trick Williams and Danhausen are getting monotonous and boring, repeating the same stuff over and over again. I wonder if they're pulled back a little with Trick Williams because of the whole gingerbread man stuff, which sucks because I actually loved the gingerbread man stuff. And I hope I wish you would lean into his like videos, his music videos, and just like him him doing these really off-the-wall things to get under people's skin. Like, I really loved his stuff with the gingerbread man, but I'm wondering if that's why they're pulling back and making Trick very just going the safe route with Trick, which I think is a mistake. But with Dan House, I do think that some people will tire of the joke quicker than others. I'm still enjoying it. And I'm loving, I'm loving the storyline with the New York Knicks and the NBA as well. I'm very happy though that they took him off raw and now he's only on SmackDown because I was afraid that they were that he was gonna be just it was gonna be too much of a good thing. So so I think I think right now they are they are limiting the exp the overexposure of Dan Housen. He's gotten a lot of goodwill with me because of the last two things that he's done. So I'm still I'm still on board. I'm still on board, but I do understand why some people might be like, all right, what are we doing now? What are we doing now? What's next? So I I understand your critique. I'm just not with you yet on that. So all right, boys, all right, girls, those are your hot takes for SmackDown. See ya for triple A tonight, or or if I can't make it, Clash in Italy tomorrow, 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. See ya bye.
